I remember when Carisha was a brand new mom and said she couldn't understand how other moms ever find time to post. I heartily agree! I have never been so busy in my life, in a good way, but it leaves me little time for Xanga. I thought since it has been 3 months since my last post it was time for an update.

Let's see...we went to Indiana for Harris Family Thanksgiving. That was fun! Sailor is a great little traveler. She was so good on all four of our flights and slept great the whole time we were gone -- better than she does at home, actually. She loved all the attention from her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Here are some pics:

    With Aunt Teresa

    With sweet cousin Hannah

    Sittin' on Grandpa's lap

Getting ready for the "Goodnight" candle ceremony.
Mom and Dad got her this PJ unionsuit, which I love.
Frank and I did agree that it's the one and only time
she'll have writing on her behind though.

All gussied up with Auntie Darcy
on New Year's Eve at Lodi's New Year's Meeting

In January, Sailor turned six months old and started eating solids!
Bring on the mess -- er -- fun.

In the new highchair Daddy assembled for her. Doesn't she look proud?

    First food: sweet potatoes

    Prunes, yummy!
Why is it that photos of other people's kids with food smeared
all over them are gross, but when it's your own kid it is just too cute?

More prunes that make her look like a clown.
See that pic above this one? The really messy one?
That's when Daddy fed her prunes. This one is when Mommy fed her prunes. Huh.

    Something sure was funny.

We have a new bedtime routine: bath, massage with lotion, put on PJs, read Goodnight Moon, get in Magic Sleepsuit, nurse, go to sleep (at least, that's the idea!).
Sailor has become a huge fan of the bath:

Aunt Carla bought her stacking cups, one of her favorite toys:

I took this photo for a valentine we sent out.
If you didn't get one it's because we don't like you. Kidding, kidding.

    And, just for fun:

I usually sing while I rock Sailor to sleep and recently I've tired of singing the same songs over and over, so I started taking a songbook into the nursery with me. My dad had the foresight to collect Lynwood Smith's books over the years for us kids, so I have nearly a full set including one called Lamplitin' Songs. Frank and I were talking just the other day about Lynwood's fondness for maudlin songs and, boy, does this book have some great ones! Songs about missing home, soldiers at war, unrequited love, at least three about coffins, twenty or more songs about the old homeplace/cabin/shack and lots and lots of songs about "Mother" - her love, her hands, her Bible, the fact that she's getting old. But I think I've found my favorite. How's this for a lullaby?

    Babes in the Woods

My friends, have you heard how a long time ago
Two little children whose names I don't know
Were stolen away on a bright summer day
And left in the woods, I've heard people say

And when it was night, so sad was their plight
The sun went down and the moon gave no light
They sobbed and they sighed and bitterly cried
Then the poor little things, they laid down and died

And when they were dead the robins so red
Brought strawberry leaves and over them spread
And all the night long, the branches among
They mournfully whistled and this was their song:

    Poor babes in the woods.

  • So, how weird is this after yesterday's post...today Mom and I went to make my month's worth of meals at Dream Dinners and Spencer Hawes and Kevin Martin, Sacramento Kings basketball players were there picking up some meals. According to the owners, the Kings' conditioning coach (who was also there) is having trouble keeping weight on them. He wants them eating Dream Dinners meals because all the nutritional info is provided for you and it's easy to track calories and such.

    Thursday Thirteen

My brother-in-law, Fred, recently had his picture taken with basketball player Manute Bol. (I had to look up the spelling. I was considering "Minute Bowl.") This got me to thinking about the fact that I have never actually met anyone famous -- at least not anyone famous and cool. Which brings me to

My Thirteen (Very) Loose Connections to the
    Rich and Famous

    1. Francis Scott Key, author of "The Star-Spangled Banner", is one of my ancestors on my dad's side. I volunteered this information in an elementary school music class and was ridiculed by the teacher. Good times.

    2. My great-grandfather (or was it great-great-?) was a minor league pitcher who pitched to and struck out Babe Ruth.

    3. I visited Arlington National Cemetery at the same time as Queen Elizabeth II. I took photos in which she appears as a tiny purple polka-dot. I drew arrows on some of the photos and wrote "The Queen" next to them. I was 12.

    4. I also attended the same Baltimore Orioles game as the queen. The press reported that she wanted to eat a hot dog but was prohibited from doing so by royal etiquette. Lame. If I were the queen I would eat any food I pleased whenever I wanted.

    5. My grandmother, Char, went to high school with Heaven's Gate cult leader Marshall Applewhite.

    6. I attended a summer school program with the brother of child actress Mara Wilson.

    7. A few weeks ago my sister-in-law, Julie, attended the same Bikram yoga class as Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson. I was envious, as I'm a fan of women's gymnastics. I asked Julie if she spoke to Shawn and she said no, because she recognized her changing in the locker room and it seemed a little awkward, haha.

    8. My brother, Barry, was friends with a girl who went to school with Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks. Barry hung out with Colin a few times and even met Tom briefly.

    9. Frank and I saw Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger speak at the launch of his Council on Physical Fitness and Sports at Disneyland's California Adventure theme park.

    10. We also saw Maria Shriver. We were standing behind the security barrier when she walked by. I was trying to snap a picture, but she wasn't looking our way, so in my best paparazzo impression I shouted, "MARIA!" as loudly as a could. She turned, smiled, and waved and I got the picture, albeit on a lousy disposable camera.

    11. My sister-in-law, Priscilla, once took a catalog order from Cindy Crawford.

    12. As a kid, I had my picture taken with Senator Jay Rockefeller. He's a former governor of West Virginia and current U.S. Senator. Of course, there were like 50 other kids in the picture so it's not that cool.

    13. John Ritter was my mother's distant cousin. I used to think it was a bummer to be related to such a lame actor, then he died and I felt guilty.

  • Thirteen Things Motherhood Has Taught Me (So Far)

    1. Raffi songs are fun and catchy. Possibly a little too catchy.

    2. Shockingly, carrying around 11+ pounds of baby all day long doesn't give one the buff arms one has always dreamed of.

    3. My baby could not possibly be any cuter.

    4. Small accomplishments can be very exciting.

    5. Little kids LOVE babies. We rarely go out without some small child coming up to us to check Sailor out. It's so sweet and something I never noticed before I had my own child.

    6. Motherhood is the most physically and mentally exhausting thing I've ever done, but the emotional payoff can't be beat.

    7. Everyone's an expert.

    8. Even total strangers believe they have a right to tell you exactly how to care for your baby. My favorite example of this is the woman who came up to me in IKEA when Sailor was fussing and said, "She wants to be up on your shoulder." Just like that. Crazy.

    9. Baby laundry is more fun than Big People laundry.

    10. Best-laid plans sometimes don't come to fruition, as when a "Thursday Thirteen" becomes a "Thursday Ten" because the mom's brain is fuzzy and can't come up with three more things she's learned.
