    Newsday Tuesday

What's new in the Harris household? Sailor's walking everywhere and getting into everything as usual, so I guess that's not new. She's using six words at the moment: mama, dada, this, that, book, and cheese. She's sleeping longer stretches now that I've night-weaned her, but she is still waking a couple of times a night. At least it's only for 2-3 minutes at a time now. Still, it's frustrating that the books say, "almost all babies will begin to sleep through the night if they can fall asleep on their own and are not being fed during the night." Someone please tell my child this. But, this too shall pass, and all too quickly I'm told.

I'm looking forward to next week, as Frank will be on vacation. We're going to have a "staycation," although I hate that word! It just irks me for some reason. But that's what we're planning to do. Lord willing, we will take Sailor to the zoo, Fairytale Town, Lake Tahoe, the California State Fair, and Old Sacramento. Now that I stop to think about it, we are blessed to have so many fun things to do in our immediate vicinity.

  • Thursday Thirteen

In my chronically sleep-deprived state I’m a little concerned that my brain is starting to atrophy. To reassure myself and my loyal readers, I decided to see if I could come up with

    Thirteen Things I Recently Learned
That You Might Not Know Either
(is that a title or what?!)

    1. What a “cousin once removed” is. I’ve always wondered about this and Cynthia’s recent post prompted me to look it up. I get it now, but I’m confident I can’t explain it better than this Wikipedia post.

    2. There’s this interesting thing called “Rear-view captioning.” It’s for hearing impaired people. I offer you Travis Boman’s explanation: "Rear view caption is where they have the words in back of theater and we use the reflector that reflects those words so we can read them. That device goes into the cup holder and you can adjust it to where you can see the words."

    3. Things are starting to get a little bit better in Zimbabwe, now that Morgan Tsvangirai is Prime Minister. According to the BBC, “He has had to fight what one western diplomat called ‘trench warfare’ against hardliners seemingly determined to undermine the power-sharing deal with President Mugabe's Zanu-PF.” Nevertheless, the foreign press has been allowed back into the country, there is food on store shelves again, children are back in school, and optimism is on the rise.

    4. On a related note, Zanu-PF Chairman John Nkomo is delusional or thinks we are all stupid. He insists, “I don't think there are any hardliners in Zanu-PF…President Mugabe… is a principled man. Once he agrees on a program he wants it implemented. It is in the interest of the whole of Zimbabwe that the agreement succeeds."

    5. The “E” in Chuck E. Cheese stands for “Entertainment.” His full name is Charles Entertainment Cheese.

    6. Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels, was a real-life spy and much of what he wrote was based on actual events.

    7. If you were a Jew in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation and your name was Aryan-sounding, you were forced to change it to “Israel” or “Sarah”. I’m reading a fascinating book at the moment called The Zookeeper’s Wife, which tells the true story of a zookeeper and his wife (title, duh) who saved over 300 Jews by hiding them in the Warsaw Zoo during the Holocaust.

    8. The sign for “cheese”. Sailor’s word for cheese, “chis” sounds an awful lot like her “this” leading to much confusion. I’m hoping the sign will alleviate this.

    9. Babies Sailor’s age need approximately 13 hours of sleep per 24-hour period.

    10. Swine flu is especially dangerous for pregnant women, so they will receive the vaccine first when it becomes available.

    11. If I were not insured, my insulin pump supplies would cost approximately $100 per month. Glad I don’t have to pay that!

    12. Baby eczema is very common and infants often outgrow it. I hope this is the case for Sailor.

    13. If you begin using a tanning bed before age 30, your skin cancer risk increases by a whopping 75%! Pale is beautiful, people. Look at what it’s done for Edward Cullen.

  • Monday Memories

Sailor recently turned one. I was thinking about her first year of life and one of my favorite memories of her is how much she enjoyed the trip we took to Monterey when she was 7 months old. I turned 30 on February 13th and we wanted to do something special to celebrate my birthday, and since Frank's birthday is the 12th and Valentine's Day is the 14th, we decided to make a weekend of it. We wanted to do something that Sailor might enjoy, so we decided to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We stayed two nights in a hotel close to the aquarium and arranged our visits around Sailor's naps. Sailor loved it and we all had a great time! Here are some pictures:

They had a really neat area especially for babies. Sailor loved the "waterbed."

She was not so crazy about her first trip down a slide!

They had  lots of things at a baby's eye level, including this mirror.
My child never can get enough of looking at herself!

The aquarium has an amazing and beautiful jellyfish tank,
which was one of Sailor's favorite things.

This was Sailor's favorite fish tank. We took her to look at it several times.

    Checking out a ray:

    And catching some rays:

It had been nearly 13 years since we had visited the aquarium. We were so impressed with the quality of the exhibits and how family-friendly everything was. We highly recommend it for those with children, and those without kids!

  • Have I mentioned that I love NPR?

A couple of weeks ago I heard a story about a research study involving playing recorded voices to plants. You know that old wives' tale that says plants grow faster if you talk to them? Well, turns out it's not a myth. Plants actually do grow faster when they're spoken to -- if it's the right kind of voice, that is. Apparently plants grew fastest when researchers played recordings of female voices. Plants that "heard" some of the male voices actually grew slower than a control group of plants that heard nothing at all!

  • I miss posting on Xanga. Since I had Sailor, Facebook is an easier, faster way to keep in touch with everyone, but I miss the writing that I did on Xanga. Looks like lots of other people have abandoned it too. Come on, people, let's BRING BACK XANGA! I'll start...

Sailor's a year old now. I can't believe how fast the time has flown! She's a busy bee: she's been walking well for about a week and is waving and pointing at everything. She had about six words at one point, but she's not using them much at the moment. I read somewhere that verbal development may slow down when a child is mastering a physical skill (like walking). She jabbers a lot and she understands a lot of what we say, so I've no doubt she'll be a little chatterbox soon.

Mom was teasing me the other day because before Sailor was born I said I didn't want my living areas to be cluttered up with a ton of baby stuff. That was doable in the first several months, before she was mobile, but those days are long over. Now it looks like Babies R Us threw up on my living room. Sailor has learned how to open her toy box and delights in pulling out toys and throwing them over her shoulder. The messiness is hard for me to take, but I don't feel like picking up the same mess several times a day, so I'm learning to live with it. Mom's a teacher and has been off for the summer. She's been coming to help me out once or twice a week and it's been wonderful. She's going back to work next week and Sailor and I will miss her visits!

In other news, we just finished landscaping our backyard. It looks beautiful! We have been wanting to do this ever since we moved in 7 years ago and it feels great to finally have it done. I use the term "we" loosely, since we actually paid a landscaper to do almost all the work. He tore out our old cracked concrete, poured a new, more interesting patio, and installed automatic sprinklers and sod. He also planted shrubs across the front and back of the house, and created a pretty flower bed. We added some finishing touches -- new plants in the containers on the patio and window boxes. We have drip lines installed and I'm excited about not having to water everything. Sailor loves her new backyard! She has eaten dirt a couple of times. (Don't tell her daddy!)

Today we're going to lunch and go swimming with a couple of mommy friends and their babies. I'm so blessed to have a group of friends with babies close to Sailor's age.

I'll leave you with a photo. This was taken in June:

Your turn! What has everyone been up to?

I remember when Carisha was a brand new mom and said she couldn't understand how other moms ever find time to post. I heartily agree! I have never been so busy in my life, in a good way, but it leaves me little time for Xanga. I thought since it has been 3 months since my last post it was time for an update.

Let's see...we went to Indiana for Harris Family Thanksgiving. That was fun! Sailor is a great little traveler. She was so good on all four of our flights and slept great the whole time we were gone -- better than she does at home, actually. She loved all the attention from her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Here are some pics:

Getting ready for the "Goodnight" candle ceremony.
Mom and Dad got her this PJ unionsuit, which I love.
Frank and I did agree that it's the one and only time
she'll have writing on her behind though.

All gussied up with Auntie Darcy
on New Year's Eve at Lodi's New Year's Meeting

In January, Sailor turned six months old and started eating solids!
Bring on the mess -- er -- fun.

In the new highchair Daddy assembled for her. Doesn't she look proud?

    First food: sweet potatoes

    Prunes, yummy!
Why is it that photos of other people's kids with food smeared
all over them are gross, but when it's your own kid it is just too cute?

More prunes that make her look like a clown.
See that pic above this one? The really messy one?
That's when Daddy fed her prunes. This one is when Mommy fed her prunes. Huh.

    Something sure was funny.

We have a new bedtime routine: bath, massage with lotion, put on PJs, read Goodnight Moon, get in Magic Sleepsuit, nurse, go to sleep (at least, that's the idea!).
Sailor has become a huge fan of the bath:

Aunt Carla bought her stacking cups, one of her favorite toys:

    February 2009, 7 months old
I took this photo for a valentine we sent out.
If you didn't get one it's because we don't like you. Kidding, kidding.

    And, just for fun:

About Me

  • I'm a stay-at-home mom, married thirteen years to my wonderful husband Frank, and mom to Sailor Isabella who was born July 3, 2008. I love being a mom! I also love to travel, read, blog, and keep up with friends. Oh yeah, and I'm a Type 1 diabetic.
